Blizzard Nemo

The Nemo storm dumped between 10-12 inches of snow on us.  I think the forecasters were predicting between 12 and 18 inches so it could have been worse.  It was our first heavy snowfall since moving to NYC and we took advantage of it!

Katie was teething over the weekend and running a fever so she stayed inside with Scott.  Scott isn't your biggest fan of snow.  Having grown up in Syracuse he's seen more than his fair share of snow so he happily stayed inside with Katie while Mikey and I suited up and headed out!

Our first stop was the Snowman Showdown right across the street at Asphalt Green.  It took place on their soccer field.  So you could actually watch the event right from our apartment windows!  We made our way to the soccer field where volunteers handed out Snowman hats and carrots.  They had a DJ playing music and some news reporters were there too interviewing random people.  I must say that the snowman were short!  It was not your best snowman making type snow.  To dry and just wouldn't stick together.  Most snowman were between 1 and 2 feet tall.  I tried to make a snowman but just didn't have the patience for it....especially since Mikey was sitting on the sled, getting cold and eating snow.  He was just kinda happy to sit and look around so I joined him and we watched everyone else struggle making snowmen.  There might have been about 5 out of 40 or so that were decent looking snowmen!

After watching for a while we went inside for some free cocoa to warm our bodies before walking over to 89th and East End Avenue to go sledding at Carl Schurz Park. It was controlled chaos.  Everyone went down the hills at their own speed and then promptly stood up and went to the side of the hill to walk back up it.  By the time we got there around 2:30pm the snow was nicely packed down and fast and slick.   We did some people watching and went down a handful of times.  At the bottom I had to dig my heels in the snow to slow down and stop, so we had some snow spraying into our face everytime which Mikey didn't like....but the rest of the time he had a huge grin on his face!

Thanks for bringing us some fun Nemo!

At the snowman showdown.

Mikey content to sit and eat snow.

Walking to find our perfect spot for our snowman...which we didn't end up making.

Lots of people here.

This snowman had huge eye lashes!

Most snowman were about this height.

Time to sled!  The first time I've seen Carl Schurz look like this!

Lots of people sledding.

Patiently waiting to go down.

I let him go down a gradual incline by himself.

Mikey and I about to go sledding!

He walked up the hill by himself every single time!

Playing chase in the snow is fun!

Gorgeous views to take in when sledding.

Get back here!

The snowman showdown rules.

We had the Asphalt Green playground to ourselves!

Close to the end of the snowman showdown.  Taken from our apt.

Our snowman hat on a little mound of snow.
